Former U.S. President Trump’s Impeachment Trial Likely to Begin in the Second Week of February
[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] The impeachment trial of former U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to begin in the second week of next month.
Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader from the Democratic Party, announced this on the night of the 22nd (local time) after holding talks with the Republican Party, according to foreign media including the AP News. The Republicans argued that former President Trump should be given time to prepare for the impeachment trial.
Leader Schumer said, "We all hope that the disgraceful events happening now will pass into history," adding, "However, healing and unity in American society can only be achieved when the truth is revealed and someone is held accountable."
Accordingly, the House of Representatives will send the impeachment articles to the Senate on the 25th, and the debate to commence the trial is expected to take place around the 29th, AP News reported.
Meanwhile, the Senate plans to conduct confirmation hearings for the initial cabinet appointments of the Joe Biden administration and review support budget bills for economic stimulus in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
