Yeosu City Launches Campaign to Support Local Flower Farmers by Buying Flowers
‘Love Flower Day’ Office Flower Lifestyle Promotion (One Table One Flower)
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Yeosu City (Mayor Kwon Oh-bong) announced on the 18th that it has taken steps to help flower farmers, whose sales have sharply declined due to the cancellation of various events such as school graduation ceremonies caused by the extension of strengthened social distancing measures.
With the demand for flowers plummeting due to COVID-19, flowers have been shipped at one-third of the usual price compared to normal years, dealing a direct blow to flower farmers who are experiencing severe difficulties.
Accordingly, Yeosu City has designated every Friday as ‘Love Flower Day’ again this year following last year, and will carry out a campaign to make flowers a part of office life (1 table 1 flower) until the end of February.
They are promoting flower purchases by linking with city hall employees, the Nonghyup (National Agricultural Cooperative Federation), and related organizations using locally grown baby’s breath and Alstroemeria flowers.
Departments under the city, Nonghyup, and related organizations wishing to participate can apply to the Agricultural Policy Division by Wednesday each week, and the flowers will be delivered directly to the respective organizations on Friday, two days later.
Yoon Hye-ok, Director of the Agricultural Technology Center, said, “It is very unfortunate that flower farmers have been hit hard by COVID-19 and the difficulties of poor sales are prolonged. We hope many will actively participate in the flower purchasing campaign to share the hardships of the farmers.”
