Brazil Surpasses 1,000 COVID-19 Deaths for Five Consecutive Days
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] In Brazil, the number of deaths from the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) has exceeded 1,000 for five consecutive days, raising urgent calls for vaccination.
According to the Brazilian Ministry of Health on the 16th (local time), the cumulative death toll increased by 1,050 from the previous day to 209,296. The daily death toll has exceeded 1,000 from the 12th through the 16th.
The cumulative number of confirmed cases was recorded at 8,455,059, an increase of 61,567 from the previous day. The number of new confirmed cases has remained in the 60,000 range for four consecutive days from the 13th to the 16th.
In the southeastern state of S?o Paulo alone, the cumulative death toll is approaching 50,000, and the cumulative confirmed cases have surpassed 1.6 million.
Local governments and health experts are urging that vaccination must be expedited as the COVID-19 resurgence continues.
