50-Year-Old Sentenced to Prison for Arson Attempt Driven by Grudge Over Refusal to Settle Domestic Violence Case
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Ju Cheol-in] A man in his 50s who cut a gas pipe and attempted arson after refusing to settle a domestic violence case was sentenced to prison.
The Changwon District Court Criminal Division 2 (Presiding Judge Lee Jeong-hyun) announced on the 15th that it sentenced A (51, male), who was tried on charges of breaking and entering and other offenses for cutting a city gas pipe and attempting to set fire in order to settle a domestic violence case, to one year in prison.
A broke into the home of a woman in a de facto marital relationship and her son in a drunken state on October 22 of last year in Seongsan-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongnam, after being refused a settlement of the domestic violence case.
The victim woman, who happened to be outside, saw this and came to the house with the police. A then tried to pull the police inside the house saying, "Let's die together," and attempted to light a lighter, but was subdued and the attempt failed.

The court stated, "The nature of the crime is very serious, but the defendant made an incomprehensible excuse that he does not remember because he was drunk."
