11 Confirmed Cases Among Transferred Inmates from Yeongwol Prison to Seoul Dongbu Detention Center
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] The cluster infection of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) originating from Seoul Dongbu Detention Center continues.
According to the Ministry of Justice on the 12th, as of 6 p.m. that day, the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in correctional facilities nationwide reached 1,249, an increase of 23 from the previous day. Compared to the count at 8 a.m. that day, it also increased by 11.
Among the 23 newly confirmed cases, 21 are related to Dongbu Detention Center. Eleven inmates who tested negative at Dongbu Detention Center and were transferred to Yeongwol Prison were confirmed positive on that day.
Previously, correctional authorities transferred 217 inmates who tested negative at Dongbu Detention Center to Yeongwol Prison, but among them, 8 tested positive in the full inspection, and 11 additional cases were confirmed on that day.
Additionally, in the 8th full inspection conducted at Dongbu Detention Center the previous day, 7 inmates were confirmed positive, including 2 male inmates and 5 female inmates, and 3 former inmates of Dongbu Detention Center tested positive after release. Furthermore, 2 staff members of Sangju Prison, unrelated to Dongbu Detention Center, were also confirmed positive.

Until now, more than 1,000 cluster infections have occurred at Dongbu Detention Center, but no female inmates had tested positive. However, the first female confirmed case appeared in the 7th full inspection, and with additional female confirmed cases emerging on that day, concerns about another cluster infection are growing.
