Gwangyang-si Operates Nuisance Wildlife Damage Prevention Team
Capture Activities Conducted to Prevent Crop Damage
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Gwangyang City announced on the 12th that it will operate the "Wildlife Damage Prevention Team for the First Half of This Year" to reduce crop damage caused by harmful wild animals.
The harvest season wildlife damage prevention team consists of 31 hunters who have obtained hunting licenses and firearm possession permits and have more than five years of experience.
The damage prevention team will operate from this month until April, targeting all areas except military facility protection zones, wildlife protection zones, and urban areas where human life or protected facilities may be at risk. They will capture wild boars, water deer, magpies, and other animals that cause damage to crops.
During the harvest season, the damage prevention team mainly conducts capture activities upon reports of crop damage caused by harmful wild animals and also performs wildlife management tasks through surveillance activities around farmland.

Jo Hee-su, Director of the Resource Circulation Division, said, "Although many harmful wild animals causing crop damage have been captured so far, the absence of top predators in the ecosystem food chain, such as tigers, has led to a continued high reproduction rate of wild boars and water deer," adding, "We will strive to reduce crop damage and alleviate farmers' difficulties through the active activities and support of the damage prevention team."
