Samsung Electronics Individual Shareholding Hits Record High of 7%, Surpassing Institutional Investors
Purchased Over 2 Trillion Won This Year... Exceeding Total Net Buying Amount on KOSPI
[Asia Economy Reporter Minwoo Lee] Individual investors' stake in Samsung Electronics has reached an all-time high of 7%. This surpasses the scale of domestic institutional investors excluding the National Pension Service.
According to the financial investment industry on the 10th, from January last year to the 8th of this month, individuals have net purchased 202,064,917 shares of Samsung Electronics. During the same period, institutions, excluding the National Pension Service's volume (net purchase of 4,971,077 shares), net sold 116,381,028 shares. In just over a year, the individual shareholding ratio increased by 3.4 percentage points, while institutions decreased by 1.9 percentage points.
Considering that the shareholder register-based shareholding ratio at the end of last year was 3.6% for individuals and 8.7% for institutions, the individual investors' holding is estimated at 7%, and institutional holdings at 6.8%. For the first time ever, individual stakes have surpassed institutional stakes.
The individual shareholding ratio began to catch up with institutions this year. Individuals have net purchased 24.89 million shares of Samsung Electronics over five trading days this year. On the 6th alone, they bought 12.17 million shares. The total net purchase amount is 2.0539 trillion KRW. This exceeds the total net purchase amount of 1.7458 trillion KRW by individuals in the KOSPI market.

During the same period, foreigners net sold 97,686,024 shares (1.6%), reducing their stake from 55.9% to 54.3%. However, the foreign shareholding ratio based on the shareholder register at the end of last year (55.9%) differs from the ratio compiled by financial authorities (56.8%), so the actual shareholding ratio may vary slightly. Foreigners who place general orders at securities firms without a foreigner registration card are not registered in the company's shareholder register.
