On the 7th, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced the '2021 Academic Year Middle School Free Semester Operation Plan' containing these details.
The Free Semester system is a curriculum in which 1st grade middle school students do not take midterm or final exams but engage in career exploration activities. It is operated in all middle schools. Starting this year, 2nd and 3rd grade middle school students can also participate in a free semester during their self-development period (after regular exams, etc.). The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education will conduct 'process-centered evaluations' instead of written tests and provide the results to students and parents.

To improve basic academic skills, a 'Basic and Adaptation Program' will be operated within the regular Free Semester curriculum to help new students adapt to middle school life. For students requiring learning support, each school will be able to select activity programs suitable for the students, and 'Bukdodum,' a teacher’s guide based on picture book reading, will be reorganized to fit the Free Semester curriculum system and distributed to all middle schools.
