Geumcheon-gu Creates Safe Smart IoT Walkways for School Commutes
Introduction of Pedestrian Safety Services such as 'Stop Line Violation Vehicle Detection System' and 'Child Protection Zone Speed Limit Alert'
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yuseong Hoon) has completed the "Safe Smart IoT Pedestrian Path Creation" project by establishing customized smart services applying Internet of Things (IoT) technology on school commute routes with high traffic accident risks.
Using 80 million KRW from the project funds secured through last July’s selection in the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s “Resident Life Innovation Case Expansion Support Project” competition, one “Stop Line Violation Vehicle Detection System” and one “School Zone Speed Limit Reminder” were installed.
The “Stop Line Violation Vehicle Detection System” uses intelligent CCTV to detect vehicles violating the stop line at crosswalks in real time and displays the violating vehicle’s license plate number on a front electronic display board to alert drivers.
For pedestrians, the system notifies vehicle approach through LED signs and voice alerts. It was installed at the three-way intersection in front of the back gate of Geumnarae Elementary School, where pedestrian traffic is heavy but there are no traffic lights and vehicle traffic is frequent, thereby enhancing traffic safety.
Additionally, the “School Zone Speed Limit Reminder” measures the current speed of approaching vehicles and encourages drivers to slow down through emoticons and messages. It was installed on the slope in front of Dongil Girls' High School, a section prone to speeding due to its steep incline despite the concentration of large schools, creating an optimized environment to prevent traffic accidents.
Meanwhile, since 2019, the district has actively introduced smart services focused on traffic and safety, including “Floor Traffic Lights” to prevent accidents involving smartphone users (Smombie), “Smart Parking Reminder” to maintain golden time in emergencies, “AI Pedestrian Alert” to eliminate driver blind spots in alleyways, and “Runway-style Crosswalks” with high visibility even at night or in rainy weather, all aimed at enhancing pedestrian traffic safety.
