Implementation of Daily Household Waste Collection System in Geumcheon-gu
Dramatic Resolution of Janitorial Workers' Strike at Cleaning Agency on December 31; Return to Normal Work from Early Morning of January 1, New Year's Day
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that on the 31st of last month, the labor and management of the Geumcheon-gu cleaning subcontractor company reached a dramatic agreement on wage negotiations, and normal operations resumed from January 1, the first day of the new year.
The district explained, “The union of environmental sanitation workers at the Geumcheon-gu cleaning subcontractor company demanded a wage increase and went on a full strike from 11 p.m. on the 24th of last month. However, labor and management negotiations reached a smooth agreement without carrying over into the new year, and normal operations began from the first day of the new year. However, due to the large amount of garbage generated during the strike period, it will take a few more days to return to normal.”
In addition, the district once again emphasized that to improve the inconveniences residents experienced due to the alternate-day collection of household waste, it has switched to a daily household waste collection system starting January 1.
Accordingly, residents of Geumcheon-gu can dispose of household waste such as general household waste, food waste, and recyclables on all days except Saturdays.
Each household should put general household waste and food waste into their respective volume-based bags, and recyclables into transparent bags, and dispose of them in front of their house or store between 6 p.m. and midnight.
Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “I welcome the resolution of the strike through a smooth agreement between labor and management. Although there were inconveniences, I thank the residents for actively cooperating by refraining from disposing of household waste. I also ask for active participation in the implementation of the daily household waste collection system starting this year.”
