Jeonnam Police Operate Special Digital Sex Crime Investigation Unit... 86 Cases and 86 Suspects Arrested, 14 Detained
From March 23 to December 31 last year (9 months), intensive crackdowns, investigations, and victim protection activities were conducted

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] The Jeollanam-do Police Agency has established and operated a ‘Digital Sex Crime Special Investigation Unit’ at each police station in the jurisdiction to respond comprehensively and systematically to digital sex crimes, which have emerged as a serious social issue, while simultaneously promoting investigations and victim protection.
The Jeonnam police announced on the 3rd that from March 23 to the end of December last year, they arrested a total of 86 people, including 18 participants in group chat rooms related to digital sex crimes such as the so-called ‘n-beonbang’ and ‘Baksa-bang,’ and detained 14 of them.
According to the police investigation results, a significant number of suspects (70 people, 82%) were found to be distributed among teenagers and people in their twenties who have good access to communication media.
Additionally, a victim protection team was established within the special investigation unit to support professional and systematic victim protection activities, implementing a total of 183 customized protection and support measures for 44 victims.
The Jeonnam police plan to continue a regular crackdown system centered on the ‘Cyber Sexual Violence Dedicated Investigation Team’ even after the operation of the special investigation unit ends.
Along with this, they will cooperate with related organizations such as the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the Korea Communications Standards Commission to promptly delete and block illegal recordings, protect victims’ personal safety, provide counseling connections, and offer legal and medical support as part of protection activities.
