[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Ahead of the inauguration of the new U.S. administration, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo posted multiple photos on Twitter, praising his diplomatic achievements. Among them, he included a photo from the North Korea-U.S. summit and a picture taken alongside Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha, expressing gratitude for their help in making the Korean Peninsula safer and freer, and saying, "It was a pleasure working together."
On the 2nd (local time), Secretary Pompeo posted a retrospective message on his Twitter account about his tenure as Secretary of State. Among the photos were over ten images related to the Korean Peninsula, including the North Korea-U.S. summit photo showing Chairman Kim Jong-un and President Donald Trump sitting face-to-face at the South Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Panmunjom, as well as photos from the Singapore North Korea-U.S. summit.
Pompeo stated, "The Obama administration's 'strategic patience' did not work, and we ushered in a new era," adding the hashtag Maximum Pressure. He also self-assessed, "The achievements of the Singapore and Hanoi North Korea-U.S. summits and the historic DMZ meeting cannot be denied."
Above all, he emphasized that since the start of North Korea-U.S. dialogue, North Korea has not conducted nuclear weapons or long-range missile tests, marking an end to decades of appeasement and dangerous non-engagement. In his final Twitter post, he stressed, "North Korea is currently not conducting long-range ballistic missile tests or nuclear tests; its regime has weakened, and tensions at the border have eased."
Pompeo also highlighted his own diplomatic efforts. Alongside the DMZ North Korea-U.S. summit photo, he posted a picture with Chairman Kim, mentioning, "I began negotiations with Chairman Kim as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)."
Through the photo posted with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha, he expressed his gratitude. Pompeo said, "Thank you for helping to make the Korean Peninsula safer and freer," and added, "It was a pleasure working together."
