[Kim Maengnyeong's Golf English Conversation] "Course Management Know-How"
'Course management.'
It is the act of thinking ahead about how to attack each hole and devising a strategy. It is essential to achieve a good score at a golf course you are visiting for the first time. Let's first look at the course rating on the scorecard. The easiest hole is rated handicap '18', and the hardest hole is rated handicap '1'. Here, you distinguish between holes to attack and holes to defend.
Next, go up to the teeing area of the hole you plan to attack and carefully check the locations of penalty areas such as out of bounds (OB), water hazards, and bunkers. Confirming the hole length is a must, and inspecting the overall shape is important for selecting the fairway landing area, which is the target of your tee shot. Asking the caddy about any special points to be cautious of during the hole strategy can also be helpful.
Choosing the aiming point considering your shot shape and distance is crucial. Remember that drive shots and iron shots aimed at the IP point flag and the green pin can directly lead to score-damaging errors. If there is a bunker on the right side of the fairway, a golfer with a slice shot shape should aim toward the left edge of the hole. If the distance does not match, incorporate strategies using various clubs such as a 3-wood or long irons.
The same applies to green attacks. First, the safest route is to avoid the greenside bunkers. Even if you fail to get 'on the green,' you can still expect a bogey or par with an approach shot. For beginners and intermediate players, this is a particularly dangerous zone where double bogeys or worse can occur. On a par 5 hole, the third shot should place the ball at the distance you are most confident with and in a direction that makes green attacks easier. Whether in golf or battle, reckless attacks without a strategic plan lead to certain defeat.
Golfer: What is this hole like?
Caddy: Even though it is a straight hole, it is a little difficult because it has a tight fairway.
Golfer: Do you think I could reach this par 5 in just two?
Caddy: It's possible, but the green is surrounded by bunkers.
Golfer: I am still going to try an eagle.
