North Korea's Per Capita Income Decreased to 1.41 Million Won Last Year... 1/27th of South Korea's
Statistics Korea Publishes 'Key Statistical Indicators of North Korea 2020' on 28th
Includes Various Economic Indicators Such as National Accounts and Trade
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] Last year, North Korea's per capita Gross National Income (GNI) was 1.41 million won, which is about 1/27th of South Korea's level.
According to the '2020 Key Statistical Indicators of North Korea' published by Statistics Korea on the 28th, North Korea's population last year was 25.25 million, about half of South Korea's 51.71 million. The combined population of North and South Korea is 76.96 million.
North Korea's GNI was 35.3 trillion won, about 1/54th of South Korea's 1,919 trillion won. North Korea's per capita GNI recorded 1.41 million won, a decrease from 1.43 million won the previous year. Compared to 10 years ago (20.5 times), the income gap between North and South Korea is widening.
North Korea's total trade volume was 3.24 billion dollars, about 1/322nd of South Korea's 1,045.6 billion dollars. Statistics Korea explained, "This reflects the base effect caused by a significant decrease (-48.8%) in trade volume from the previous year due to the United Nations (UN) sanctions against North Korea."
Last year, North Korea's export volume was 2.8 billion dollars, and imports were 2.97 billion dollars, increasing by 14.4% and 14.1% respectively compared to the previous year.
This year, North Korea has diplomatic relations with 161 countries worldwide, 30 fewer than South Korea (191 countries). The most recent international organization it joined is the 'International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO)' in 2013.
