61 Storefront Improvements Completed in Seongsu-dong, Seongdong-gu
Improvement Project for 84 Signboards at 61 Stores in Seongsu-dong Area to Complete by Mid-December... Led by Signboard Improvement Residents' Committee with 95% Participation Rate Ensuring High Quality
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Wono) completed the signboard improvement project for a total of 61 stores in the Seongsu-dong area in mid-December.
This project targeted stores in the Seongsu-dong area to remove large and old signboards that did not fit the urban landscape, aiming to install new signboards suited to the characteristics of the streets and buildings. The voluntary participation rate of store owners reached 95%, enhancing the project's completeness.
Among 64 stores located on Achasan-ro 7-gil and Seongsuil-ro 12-gil in Seongsu-dong, a total of 61 stores participated, installing 84 newly designed custom signboards with a project budget of 160 million KRW.
From the early stages of the project, the district reflected residents' opinions to establish the project plan, encouraging voluntary participation from residents through the Signboard Improvement Residents' Committee composed of store owners, building owners, and resident representatives in the target area, from the design conception to the planning phase.
Additionally, for non-participating stores, public and private sectors jointly visited completed construction sites and made active efforts to increase participation through persuasion.
Kim Gilje, chairman of the Signboard Improvement Residents' Committee in Seongsu 2-ga 3-dong, said, “It was difficult to persuade store owners who liked large and flashy signboards, but seeing the satisfied store owners after the project completion gave me a sense of accomplishment,” adding, “Through this project, I realized that signboards are not private property but public goods that greatly affect the urban environment.”
The district announced that even after the project completion, the installation company will conduct regular maintenance and monitoring as needed.
Furthermore, a resident autonomous council will be formed and operated to manage the target area post-project, and new businesses installing signboards will be required to comply with the ‘Designation Notice of Maintenance Pilot Zone.’
