[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Byun Jae-il, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea (photo), said, "OTT operators are paying attention to the Korean market. We need to look into how we can grow domestic OTT services."
On the 22nd, at the event "Tasks for the Sustainable Growth of the Domestic Media Ecosystem," co-hosted by the Media Future Research Institute and Byun Jae-il's office, Byun said, "Until recently, when making policies, we referred to foreign cases or legislation and considered our stance in the process. However, in the media market, overseas operators are now focusing on the domestic market."
He diagnosed, "The wired internet era began in the 2000s, but mobile internet has rapidly developed, and related content consumption has greatly increased." Byun explained that we have surpassed the wired internet era and reached the mobile era, and since mobile speeds are no longer inferior to wired internet, platform operators inevitably pay attention to the Korean market. He added, "Korea is a market where platform operators can compete with high-quality network services, and such network environments continuously expand the influence of the OTT market."

Byun emphasized, "Ultimately, the biggest concern is how domestic OTT operators can grow together. We need to create a foundation to nurture Korean OTT operators as well. In particular, it is time to consider enabling our domestic operators to expand overseas."
