Trump: "Israel-Morocco Agreement on Normalization of Relations"
Saudi-Israel Relations Normalization Remains Pending
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] U.S. President Donald Trump announced the normalization agreement between Israel and Morocco.
On the 10th (local time), President Trump tweeted, "Our two great friends, Israel and Morocco, have agreed to fully normalize diplomatic relations. A huge breakthrough for peace in the Middle East."
Morocco is the fourth country to agree to normalize relations with Israel recently, following the United Arab Emirates, Sudan, and Bahrain, mediated by President Trump.
President Trump also stated, "Today, I signed a proclamation recognizing Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara," adding, "Morocco's serious and realistic autonomy proposal is the only basis for a fair and lasting solution for enduring peace and prosperity."
This means that the U.S. has recognized Morocco's sovereignty claim over the Western Sahara region as part of this agreement. President Trump argued, "Morocco recognized the United States in 1777," and "It is appropriate for us to recognize their sovereignty over Western Sahara."
Israel and Morocco established low-level diplomatic relations in the 1990s after Israel made a provisional peace agreement with Palestine, but these relations were suspended in 2000 following the second Palestinian uprising.
Now, the U.S. focus is on the normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia, the dominant power in the Gulf, and Israel.
AFP reported that Jared Kushner, senior White House advisor and President Trump's son-in-law, said that it is only a matter of time before Saudi Arabia normalizes relations with Israel.
Kushner stated, "At this point, it is inevitable that Israel and Saudi Arabia will join forces and fully normalize relations."
Previously, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu secretly met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud in Saudi Arabia, but reports indicated that the Crown Prince avoided reaching an agreement considering the U.S. administration change.
