Canada Approves Use of Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine
"Safe and Effective"
US Approval Imminent
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] On the 9th (local time), the Canadian Ministry of Health approved the use of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine. This is the third approval worldwide for the Pfizer vaccine.
The Canadian Ministry of Health stated that the COVID-19 vaccine jointly developed by Pfizer and Germany's BioNTech is "safe, effective, and of good quality."
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was approved for use in the UK on the 2nd and in Bahrain on the 4th.
In a statement, the Canadian Ministry of Health said, "Canadians can be reassured that the review process was rigorous and a strong monitoring system is in place," adding, "We will closely monitor vaccine safety after its release and take immediate action if any safety concerns arise."
Canada has set the vaccination target age at 16 years and older, but plans to revise the age limit if clinical trial results by age group show it is safe for children.
The Canadian government has signed a contract to purchase a total of 20 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine and will initially receive 249,000 doses within this year.
