View original image[Asia Economy Reporters Seunggon Han and Yeongeun Kim] Recently, a video showing medical staff at an animal hospital in the Gwangju area abusing a dog by spraying bathroom deodorizer on it after surgery has sparked controversy. The dog passed away after about three hours, causing public outrage.
On the 1st, a dog that underwent a tooth extraction surgery at an animal hospital in Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, was not moved to the recovery room for nearly an hour after the surgery. It was revealed that the medical staff sprayed bathroom deodorizer on the dog and even shaved its fur. Additionally, it appears that the dog's temperature, breathing, and blood pressure were not properly monitored after the surgery.
From the 3rd to the 5th, the dog's owner, Mr. A, posted CCTV footage and photos from the animal hospital on his Instagram, stating, "The medical staff sprayed perfume all over the dog’s body and laughed mockingly while watching. Eventually, my dog passed away."
Mr. A said, "When I saw my deceased dog, there was a strange smell so strong it gave me a headache. Seeing the dog groomed after surgery raised many questions. After checking the CCTV, I saw the staff spraying bathroom deodorizer on the dog's face and body while laughing, then taking out a diffuser and personal perfume to apply it thoroughly on the dog’s body with cotton pads."

Our small and cute dog, only 8 months old and weighing just 750g, must have been so cold and scared," he appealed.
The released photos and videos show the medical staff spraying bathroom deodorizer on the dog after using shampoo, taking perfume out of a bag and applying it all over the dog’s body during treatment, and the staff laughing mockingly while watching.
As the incident spread through social networking services (SNS) and online communities related to pets, the animal hospital issued an apology online.
The animal hospital stated, "During the recovery from anesthesia, the staff combed the dog to pay more attention to it, and there was no intention of abuse. However, we sincerely apologize for using an inappropriate product to remove the dog’s inflammation odor." They added, "We also work with a sense of mission as people who deal with life and death while treating animals."
Nevertheless, anger and criticism toward the hospital continue among netizens who own pets, and public outrage has not subsided. On the 4th, a petition titled "Please strongly punish Baro Animal Hospital in Juwol-dong, Gwangju Metropolitan City" was posted on the Blue House’s National Petition Board, and as of 1 p.m. on the 7th, three days after posting, it had gained over 100,000 signatures.
The petitioner said, "Animal hospitals should treat injured animals, but the doctor and director seem to be working to 'kill' them instead, which is truly hateful," and urged, "Please prevent such incidents from happening again."
Mr. A, who owns the dog, expressed anger, saying, "I was very upset after seeing the related news, and I cannot understand any of the animal hospital staff’s actions." He added, "Animal hospitals are the only places where we can entrust our sick pets, but now that abuse incidents are occurring even there, I feel uneasy about taking my pets to animal hospitals in the future." He concluded, "Apologies and reflection are natural, but I hope this does not end here and that proper punishment is carried out."

Regarding this, Lee Ji-yeon, representative of Animal Liberation Wave, said, "While services and industries related to pets are expanding, it seems that the basic awareness of animal rights among related workers is lacking." She continued, "In this case, it is especially regrettable that an animal hospital, which is supposed to save and treat animal lives, showed a disrespectful attitude toward animals," and urged, "Pets should not be seen as a source of profit but with a more responsible and ethical attitude."
