Why Do Computer Repair Shops and Real Estate Signs Use '119'?
Reflecting Public Expectations to "Resolve Issues Swiftly"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] 119 is an emergency call number, but it has long been used as a synonym for firefighting. Even in urgent situations, people are much more likely to say "Call 119" than "Call the fire department." Its recognition is so high that even young children know it, which is why 119 is often used as a product name, business name, or service program title.
On the 6th, the National Fire Agency analyzed 951 business names registered on internet portal sites that include 119, and found that 26.2% (249 places) were used in computer installation or repair businesses. This is interpreted as meaning that 119 implies "quickly solving problems."
Following that, 119 was used in real estate-related businesses (12.2%), pest control businesses (12.1%), repair construction businesses (10.8%), and laundry businesses (7.5%).
The National Fire Agency explained that because the public service characteristics of firefighting (119) can be summarized as promptness, risk resolution, and solving daily inconveniences, related industries performing similar tasks often use 119 in their names.
In terms of product names, 119 was used not only for firefighting or safety products but also for books that provide first aid knowledge or life wisdom, as well as medicines like pest control agents. Additionally, although not as business names, 119 was used as a service product name in areas such as insurance and loans.

Chosunho, spokesperson for the National Fire Agency, said, "As seen in business names, the public perceives firefighting as an organization that promptly dispatches and solves problems at any time, which directly connects to the public's expectations and desires. We will continue to improve service quality so that firefighting can better meet these public expectations."
