Seoul City Cancels 'Jeya-ui Jong' Event... First Time in 67 Years
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] The annual ringing of the Bosingak "Bell of the Year" event in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, which used to take place from the night of December 31 to the early morning of January 1, will not be held this winter, a Seoul city official announced on the 6th.
This is the first time in 67 years since the event began in 1953 that it will not be held.
A Seoul city official explained, "Considering the severe spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), we had no choice but to cancel the Bell of the Year event plan."
Seoul city is also reviewing measures due to concerns that crowds may gather around Gwanghwamun and other areas around midnight as the year changes, to see off the old year and welcome the new one.
