Yeosu City's First Barrier-Free City Development Project, Discussion on Concrete Implementation Strategies, etc.
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] A proposal has been made to designate the area from Goindol Park to Mipyeong Park as a barrier-free pilot zone to raise awareness about ‘barrier-free cities’.
The Yeosu City Council (Chairman Jeon Chang-gon) announced that participants in the ‘Barrier-Free Tourism City Creation Forum Connecting Be-Peu Road’ held in the city council’s small conference room on the 26th of last month reached a consensus on this proposal.
The forum, hosted by the council’s research group ‘Barrier-Free City Creation Policy Research Association,’ was attended by council members Min Deok-hee, Joo Jae-hyun, Na Hyun-soo, and Kang Hyun-tae, as well as representatives from disability organizations, social welfare facilities, civil engineering design experts, and city government department heads as panelists.
The presenters were Professor Lee Tae-soo of Chonnam National University and Professor Lee Gyu-il of Samyook University, who presented on ‘Plans for Creating a Barrier-Free Tourism Course Be-Peu Road’ and ‘Cases of Creating Barrier-Free Tourism Environments,’ respectively.
During the subsequent discussion, participants agreed that raising interest and awareness about barrier-free environments is crucial for creating barrier-free cities, and they also supported the designation of a pilot zone where people can directly experience barrier-free environments.
Additionally, proposals were made such as “institutionalizing the participation of B/F experts from the early stages of budget allocation and project implementation” and “actively reviewing budgets related to barrier-free initiatives during next year’s supplementary budget allocation.”
Council member Na Hyun-soo urged continuous attention, stating, “I believe that improvement inevitably occurs simply through interest in barrier-free initiatives,” while council member Joo Jae-hyun called for practical efforts, saying, “Let’s find a faster route to the ‘Be-Peu Road.’”
Council member Kang Hyun-tae emphasized the need for institutional support such as enacting ordinances to create a barrier-free tourism environment.
