Hwasun-gun Mobilizes Full Effort for Preemptive Control of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza
[Hwasun=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Young-gyun] Jeollanam-do Hwasun-gun (Governor Gu Chung-gon) announced on the 3rd that it is making every effort to implement multifaceted preemptive quarantine measures to block the regional outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI).
Following the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) at a duck farm in Jeongeup-si, Jeollabuk-do, the day before, a highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) outbreak occurred at a laying hen farm in Sangju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and highly pathogenic AI antigens were detected in wild birds across the country, creating a very dangerous situation.
The quarantine authorities raised the livestock disease crisis alert to the ‘serious’ level and issued a ‘nationwide temporary movement suspension order.’
Accordingly, preemptive quarantine measures such as rapid and thorough disinfection of livestock, workers, and livestock-related vehicles at poultry farms have been implemented.
In particular, since thorough disinfection is considered the basic and most important measure for preventing highly pathogenic AI, key disinfection facilities and farm movement control posts have been installed and are being operated strictly for preemptive prevention.
The county is deploying a joint quarantine team to conduct daily clinical surveillance and disinfection focusing on vulnerable areas such as poultry farms, livestock facilities, small streams, and reservoirs.
Additionally, the import and slaughter of ducks raised in Jeollabuk-do are prohibited, a quicklime belt has been established, and feed vehicles are required to undergo a mandatory four-step disinfection before entering farms.
Quarantine guidelines such as banning gatherings and events of poultry farmers are also being actively communicated to encourage voluntary quarantine practices among farmers.

A county official said, “If highly pathogenic AI occurs, preventive culling is conducted on farms within a 3 km radius, causing not only a decrease in farm income but also many inconveniences such as movement suspension and control of entry vehicles and personnel. Therefore, proactive preemptive prevention activities and strict compliance with quarantine rules by farmers are more important than ever.”
