Korean Air Wins $150 Billion Contract for US Military H-53E Heavy Helicopter Maintenance Project
US Marine Corps and Navy Large Helicopters Overhauled for 9 Years
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] Korean Air has secured a $150 million maintenance contract for U.S. military helicopters.
Korean Air announced on the 30th that it recently won a contract from the U.S. Department of Defense for the overhaul (complete disassembly, inspection, replacement, and reassembly) of H-53E large helicopters deployed in the Asia-Pacific region. This project will run for nine years from December this year to May 2029, with a total project scale of approximately 150 billion KRW.
The H-53E models handled by Korean Air include the CH-53E operated by the U.S. Marine Corps for troop and heavy cargo transport, and the MH-53E operated by the U.S. Navy for long-range mine detection and removal missions. Among these, the CH-53E is the largest and heaviest helicopter owned by the U.S. military, using three 4,000-horsepower engines and having a maximum takeoff weight of 33 tons, similar to the weight of an F-15 fighter jet.
Korean Air will be responsible for inspecting, replacing, and repairing major structures and individual components of the H-53E, as well as operational checks and test flight support. The company explained that due to the rotation and vibration of the seven large main rotor blades (one of the main components generating lift for helicopter flight) and four tail rotor blades, as well as the unique features of the foldable rear fuselage, the adjustment of alignment and fuselage repairs require more complex work compared to fixed-wing aircraft.
A Korean Air official stated, "Winning this H-53E overhaul contract, following the recent contract for the U.S. Air Force F-16 life extension and overhaul project, has further enhanced trust in Korean Air's maintenance capabilities and specialized military logistics support."

Meanwhile, Korean Air has been engaged in U.S. military overhaul projects since 1978, continuing maintenance and modification projects for major fighter jets, transport aircraft, and helicopters. In particular, Korean Air has performed overhaul on a total of 204 H-53 helicopters since 1989.
