According to NHK and other broadcasts, as of 7 p.m. on the 28th, the newly announced confirmed cases from local governments and airport quarantine stations nationwide totaled 2,684. This is the highest number of confirmed cases recorded in a single day. The previous highest daily confirmed cases were 2,591 on the 21st.
In Japan, the number of new daily confirmed cases first exceeded 2,000 on the 18th. Except for the period from the 23rd to the 25th, when the number of tests decreased due to the holidays, the cases have been spreading daily over 2,000 mainly in metropolitan areas. On this day as well, there were over 1,000 new confirmed cases in just two metropolitan areas: 561 in Tokyo and 463 in Osaka. The cumulative confirmed cases reached 146,214, approaching the 150,000 mark.
