[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim San) announced on the 20th that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Aviation Specialized Industrial Complex Development Project in front of the cargo terminal at Muan International Airport.

About 120 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony, including Governor Kim San, Chairman of the County Council Kim Dae-hyun, Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Young-rok, Jeonnam Provincial Assembly member Na Gwang-guk, Director Kim Sang-do of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Aviation Policy Office, Director Kim Do-jun of the West Sea Regional Maritime Police Agency, and local residents, celebrating the start of construction.

The Muan Aviation Specialized Industrial Complex Development Project is a project to create an industrial complex on a 350,000㎡ site around Muan International Airport with a total project cost of 44.8 billion KRW. The complex will focus on aircraft maintenance (MRO) and foster aviation-related industries. Various aviation-related businesses such as aircraft parts, logistics, in-flight meal companies, and aircraft information service providers are expected to move in.

To promote the project, Muan-gun has completed various procedures for the industrial complex development, including reflecting the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s industrial complex designation plan and obtaining approval for the general industrial complex plan from Jeollanam-do, in cooperation with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Jeollanam-do.

For the development of the industrial complex, the county signed agreements with International Aviation Maintenance Co., Ltd. and FL Technics to establish a cooperative system providing aircraft maintenance (MRO) upkeep, facilities, equipment, technical support, system education, and consulting. Additionally, a business agreement was signed with the West Sea Regional Maritime Police Agency to establish an integrated aviation base, and investment agreements were signed with four companies involved in parts and in-flight meal manufacturing.

Currently, 6.4 billion KRW for the West Sea Regional Maritime Police Agency’s integrated aviation base construction project and 1.2 billion KRW for the detailed design of the industrial complex access road have been included in the government budget. By linking knowledge infrastructure such as local universities and research institutes, the operation of resident companies will be revitalized. A feasibility study for establishing a national aviation industrial complex will be conducted to build the aviation complex into an advanced aviation industry cluster.

Once the Aviation Specialized Industrial Complex is established, it is expected to expand the domestic market share of aircraft maintenance and logistics industries, which currently rely heavily on overseas sources, actively utilize the infrastructure of Muan International Airport to attract excellent companies, create quality jobs, revitalize the local economy, and serve as a future growth engine and new growth driver for Muan.

Governor Kim San said, “Aircraft maintenance is a high value-added industry where 60% of sales revenue is labor costs, enabling large-scale job creation. The establishment of the industrial complex is expected to greatly contribute to employment increase and local economic revitalization,” adding, “We will successfully develop the industrial complex and nurture it as a representative strategic industry in the southwestern region leading the aviation industry in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution.”
