33.947 Million Paid Broadcast Subscribers in the First Half of the Year... IPTV Accounts for 51.52%
[Asia Economy Reporter Joselgina] The number of paid broadcasting subscribers in the first half of this year was recorded at 33,946,826. IPTV subscribers from KT, SK Broadband, and LG Uplus accounted for 51.52% of the total paid broadcasting market, widening the gap with Comprehensive Cable Broadcasting (SO) to 4.51 million.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 18th the results of its survey on paid broadcasting subscribers in the first half of 2020 and the market share by operator and media type. The number of paid broadcasting subscribers increased by 350,000 compared to the second half of last year. The growth rate of subscribers was somewhat lower than in previous years.
By operator, the numbers were as follows: ▲KT 7,588,574 (22.35%), ▲SK Broadband (IPTV) 5,303,285 (15.62%), ▲LG Uplus 4,597,805 (13.54%), ▲LG HelloVision 3,925,459 (11.56%), ▲KT Skylife 3,078,420 (9.07%), ▲SK Broadband (SO) 3,005,583 (8.85%). The Ministry of Science and ICT stated, "The number of subscribers and market share of the three IPTV companies are steadily increasing."
The combined number of subscribers for KT and KT Skylife was 10.67 million. The combined number of subscribers for LG Uplus and LG HelloVision was 8.52 million, and SK Broadband (IPTV and SO combined) had 8.31 million subscribers. Each company held market shares of 31.42% (a decrease of 0.1 percentage points), 25.10% (an increase of 0.19 percentage points), and 24.47%, respectively, in the paid broadcasting market. Comparing market share growth after the sunset of combined regulation, the increase by operator was similar to before.

By media type, the IPTV subscriber growth trend continues. The six-month average number of subscribers by media type was IPTV 17,489,664 (51.52%), SO 13,378,742 (39.41%), and satellite broadcasting 3,078,420 (9.07%). Monthly IPTV subscribers have been continuously increasing since November 2017, when IPTV subscribers surpassed SO subscribers. Meanwhile, SO subscribers are decreasing, widening the gap between IPTV and SO to approximately 4.51 million as of the end of June.
