Mapo-gu's Wise Rehabilitation Class with Disabled Persons 'Popular'
Support for People with Brain Lesions and Physical Disabilities to Overcome COVID-19: Home-Based Stretching and Strength Exercises, Live KakaoTalk Rehabilitation Education by Physical Therapists, and Provision of Necessary Small Tools
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) is conducting a pilot operation of an untact rehabilitation exercise class for people with disabilities who are vulnerable to health issues in preparation for the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
The district has been providing integrated rehabilitation services such as physical therapy, rehabilitation education tailored to disability types, and rehabilitation exercises through community-based rehabilitation projects to address medical access inequalities faced by residents with brain lesions and physical disabilities in the area.
In particular, the "Wise Rehabilitation Class to Overcome COVID-19," which started on the 12th, is a rehabilitation program for people with disabilities who have difficulty managing their health due to the COVID-19 situation. Participants can recover from muscle loss and functional decline caused by reduced outdoor activities through online rehabilitation education at home.
This program broadcasts easy-to-follow stretching and strength exercises live using KakaoTalk Live Talk. A physical therapist conducts the rehabilitation education, and participants and the therapist exchange feedback in real-time via the KakaoTalk chatroom.
Participants receive small exercise tools such as TheraBands (elastic bands) and basic foam rollers, enabling them to perform rehabilitation exercises at home using these items.
Currently, four registered disabled individuals from the district’s community-based rehabilitation project are participating in the Wise Rehabilitation Class.
The district plans to expand the program to every Thursday starting in December after the pilot operation period ends in November.
Eligibility for participation in the "Wise Rehabilitation Class to Overcome COVID-19" includes legally registered residents with brain lesions or physical disabilities in the district (severe disabilities grades 1?3 and less severe disabilities grades 4?6) who are able to use KakaoTalk.
For program registration or inquiries, contact the Rehabilitation Health Office at Seogang Health Branch for guidance.
Meanwhile, the district operates not only untact programs for people with disabilities but also untact exercise programs for residents whose activity levels have decreased due to COVID-19.
The "Health UP! COVID-19 OUT! Untact Exercise Program," which started in November and was operated by Ahyeon Health Promotion Center, received great responses by offering bodyweight strength exercises through real-time broadcasts, making it easy for residents to learn.
The program runs every Monday and Wednesday from 1:30 PM for one hour.
To participate, search for "Ahyeon Health Promotion Center" on Naver Band and apply to join; the administrator will approve the request.
Residents with limited outdoor activities due to COVID-19 can follow the videos to improve their health and relieve stress.
As this is an untact class, prizes will be awarded based on attendance rates, and various events will be held to add enjoyment. The program will also be expanded to include other health promotion activities beyond exercise.

Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, "As the COVID-19 situation prolongs, many residents, including people with disabilities, are facing difficulties in managing their health. We will continue to support various untact content using information technology and SNS so that people with disabilities do not give up on rehabilitation and residents can overcome COVID blues."
