Volvo Cars Conducts 30-Meter Drop Test for Passenger Rescue Manual
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Volvo Cars is creating a manual for rescue teams on how to extract passengers in the event of a traffic accident.
According to Volvo Cars Korea on the 16th, Volvo recently conducted a collision test by dropping vehicles from a height of 30 meters. This was to prepare a manual for safely protecting and rescuing passengers in extreme collision situations.
Volvo engineers prepared a total of 10 different new Volvo vehicles for this test. They first calculated how much pressure and force needed to be applied to each test vehicle to simulate extreme vehicle conditions, such as being hit by a fast-moving truck or experiencing multiple side collisions. Based on this, they recreated accident scenarios by repeatedly dropping the vehicles from a 30-meter-high crane and tested passenger rescue operations accordingly.
The details of this experiment will be included in a future research report. Rescue teams will be able to access this report free of charge, and it is expected to help further develop life-saving capabilities.
Generally, rescue workers receive training vehicles from scrapyards, many of which were manufactured 20 years ago. These aged vehicles differ significantly from the latest models in terms of steel strength, durability, and safety cage structure. Volvo’s new models are made with strong steel. Therefore, collision tests using new cars help rescue workers become familiar with the latest vehicles and allow them to check and train on more effective, improved, and new rescue techniques.
H?kan Gustafsson, Senior Investigator of Volvo Cars Traffic Accident Investigation Team, said, "Volvo Cars planned this collision test to discover fast and effective ways to save lives in the event of an accident and to assist rescue teams," adding, "Volvo Cars and Swedish rescue teams have long cooperated based on the common goal of road safety."
