AEB Radar Sensor Mounted on Front Windshield Saves 10.6 Billion KRW Annually in Repair Costs
Insurance Research Institute Study Results
As of 2019, 3.4% of Domestic Cars and 16.1% of Imported Cars Equipped with Basic AEB
Front Bumper Rail Replacement Cases 79 to 88 Times Higher than Front Windshield
Need to Research Ways to Maintain Accident Prevention Functions While Minimizing Repair Costs
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki Ha-young] It has been found that attaching the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) radar sensor to the upper part of the front windshield instead of the inside of the front bumper can save about 10.6 billion KRW annually in repair costs.
According to the Korea Insurance Development Institute on the 14th, this result came from evaluating accident prevention performance and statistical analysis of vehicles equipped with AEB. AEB is a system that automatically brakes by recognizing vehicles or pedestrians ahead with radar sensors to prevent accidents. As of the end of last year, 3.4% of domestic cars and 16.1% of imported cars come equipped with AEB as standard.
Currently, most manufacturers install the AEB radar sensor inside the front bumper. The Insurance Development Institute analyzed that this location, which is prone to damage, causes an increase in repair costs. In fact, the number of replacements for the front bumper rail was found to be about 79 to 88 times higher than that for the front windshield.
The Insurance Development Institute evaluated the accident prevention performance of vehicles with the AEB radar sensor attached to the upper part of the front windshield (imported car A) and those with the sensor attached inside the front bumper (imported car B, domestic car C). As a result, vehicle A, with the sensor mounted on the upper windshield, prevented collisions at speeds up to 60 km/h, showing performance equivalent to domestic car C with the sensor inside the front bumper. It was even superior to vehicle B (which prevented collisions up to 45 km/h). The accident prevention performance of vehicles with the AEB radar sensor mounted on the front windshield is similar to those with the sensor inside the front bumper.

The Insurance Development Institute estimated that if the radar sensor is attached to the front windshield, which has a lower risk of damage in accidents, about 10.6 billion KRW could be saved annually in repair costs. Kang Ho, president of the Insurance Development Institute, said, "While installing expensive safety devices is expected to be effective in preventing accidents, it can also cause an increase in repair costs when accidents occur," adding, "We need to research ways to maintain accident prevention performance while minimizing repair costs."
