[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said on the 8th, "In a situation where we have no choice but to coexist with the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), wearing masks is currently the best vaccine."
At the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters (CDSCH) meeting on COVID-19 held at the Government Seoul Office on the same day, Prime Minister Chung stated, "Starting this coming Friday (the 13th), fines will be imposed for violations of the mask-wearing mandate."
He added, "New social distancing measures began yesterday. As the saying goes, 'You have to fasten the first button correctly,' the initial phase of implementing the new distancing system is very important for it to take root. Especially this time, since basic quarantine rules such as mask-wearing are mandatory from level 1 of distancing, I ask the public to actively practice them in everyday life."
He continued, "To realize the goal of this distancing revision, which is 'sustainable quarantine,' we need to enhance the precision and effectiveness of quarantine measures through appropriate responses where necessary rather than uniform regulations. For this, prompt action by local governments tailored to regional situations is essential," he emphasized.
He also said, "Recently, Cheonan and Asan cities in Chungnam Province independently raised their distancing level to 1.5. This was a timely measure to curb the spread of COVID-19 early within the region. I evaluate it positively," and urged, "Other local governments should also closely communicate with quarantine authorities and proactively implement necessary measures according to the situation."
