The Office for Government Policy Coordination stated that on this day, Prime Minister Chung visited the LH rental housing located in Jangnyang-dong, where many earthquake-affected residents live, to listen to their difficulties and offer consolation.
First, Prime Minister Chung visited the site of Daeseong Apartment, which was declared a total loss during the Pohang earthquake in November 2017.
Attending the site were Kim Jeong-jae and Kim Byung-wook, members of the People Power Party, Park Jin-gyu, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Ahn Young-gyu, Director of Disaster Management at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Kang Seong-jo, Deputy Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do, Lee Kang-deok, Mayor of Pohang, and Jeong Hae-jong, Chairman of the Pohang City Council.
The Daeseong Apartment site is planned to be newly developed into the Happy City Harmony Platform, which will include a public library and childcare facilities after compensation and acquisition. Currently, site development is underway. This follows the declaration of a special disaster zone and the promotion of the Heunghae special regeneration project after the earthquake damage.
Prime Minister Chung received a report from the Mayor of Pohang on the progress of the Heunghae special regeneration project and the status of earthquake damage recovery.
He also recalled his visit to the Pohang Daeseong Apartment earthquake damage site on February 13, 2018, when he was the Speaker of the National Assembly.
He said, "We are explaining well the plan to turn difficulties into new hope, what is called a blessing in disguise," and added, "We will do our best to help Pohang residents recover from the wounds of the earthquake as soon as possible and for the Pohang community to regain vitality."
He continued, "The 'Pohang Earthquake Damage Relief Act' enacted at the end of last year and the support system show that the state does not avoid the difficulties of its people and demonstrate the reason for the existence of the state. I believe it will be a good model for creating recovery measures through close communication with the local community."
Prime Minister Chung emphasized, "We will strive to ensure that the Pohang Earthquake Truth Investigation Committee and the Damage Relief Deliberation Committee conduct objective and fair investigations and provide relief that can heal the wounds and hearts of the residents."
He also spoke about the large bridge crossing Yeongil Bay in Pohang, which is a local request. He said, "I have requested the government to conduct an in-depth review," and added, "We will continue to gather wisdom together with Pohang City, members of the National Assembly, and Gyeongbuk Province."
He also visited the LH rental housing in Jangnyang-dong, where many displaced residents affected by the earthquake have relocated. He listened to their difficulties and offered consolation.
Five displaced residents who moved from Heunghae Gymnasium to LH rental housing in September last year attended the site. Prime Minister Chung once again expressed sympathy for their having to endure an uncomfortable winter.
