Kim Sam-ho, Mayor of Gwangsan District, Gwangju: "Unprecedented COVID-19 Crisis... Citizens Are Heroes"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] “History may record the year 2020 as an unfortunate year that brought a terrifying infectious disease and the worst disaster ever at the same time. However, it will be recorded as an era of great heroes?citizens who became each other's support pillars in this unprecedented crisis, saving their communities and the nation.”
Kim Samho, Mayor of Gwangsan District, Gwangju Metropolitan City, stated this at the ‘29th Gwangsan Residents' Day Commemoration Ceremony’ held on the 31st of last month at Nambu University, which was conducted through drive-in viewing and interactive YouTube live streaming across 21 neighborhoods.
Furthermore, he introduced statistics showing that Gwangsan District, the gateway to Gwangju with the largest area and the second largest population, had the lowest number of COVID-19 confirmed cases among the five autonomous districts of Gwangju, with 0.13 cases per 1,000 people.
He also mentioned that Korea’s first citizen mask-sharing campaign, the activities of quarantine teams in each neighborhood and local commercial districts, and the crisis overcoming efforts of the local economic community, the Gwangsan Economic Vaccine Council, became exemplary models for overcoming COVID-19.
Mayor Kim also announced plans to promote projects such as the ‘Citizen Immunity Enhancement Project’ and the ‘Walking Gwangsan Project’ to support citizens’ health in the era of COVID-19 daily life.
He urged, “We must neither be complacent nor let our guard down,” and encouraged creating new paths with new methods and capabilities, just as the Gwangsan Residents' Day was commemorated by combining car rides and interactive online broadcasts.
The Gwangsan Residents' Day event, held in two parts, featured a pre-ceremony performance, the commemoration ceremony, and the awarding of the Residents' Award in the first part, and an ‘Asian Cultural Festival’ reflecting the characteristics of a multicultural city in the second part.
