Autumn Cabbage Cultivation Area Increases by 26% Year-on-Year Due to Price Rise
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] This year, as the price of napa cabbage rose, the cultivation area of autumn napa cabbage increased by more than 26% compared to last year. The cultivation area of radish decreased by nearly 4% due to the prolonged rainy season and typhoons.
According to the '2020 Autumn Napa Cabbage and Radish Cultivation Area Survey' by Statistics Korea on the 29th, the cultivation area of autumn napa cabbage this year was 13,854 hectares (1ha = 10,000㎡), an increase of 26.3% compared to the previous year (10,968ha). This is due to the price of napa cabbage nearly doubling from 764 won last year to 1,335 won this year (Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation, wholesale, commercial grade, 1kg, annual average basis).
The cultivation area of autumn napa cabbage by province was in the order of Jeonnam (3,349ha), Chungbuk (2,002ha), Gyeongbuk (1,946ha), Jeonbuk (1,526ha), and Gangwon (1,520ha).
The cultivation area of autumn radish was 5,147 hectares, a 3.7% decrease from last year (5,334ha). Although radish prices also rose this year like napa cabbage, the area decreased due to the prolonged rainy season and typhoons during the sowing period. The price of radish this year was 760 won, an increase of 143 won from last year (617 won), based on the same criteria as napa cabbage.

The cultivation area of autumn radish by province was in the order of Jeonbuk (1,236ha), Gyeonggi (886ha), Jeonnam (838ha), Chungnam (717ha), and Gangwon (537ha).
