[2020 National Audit] 7 Billion KRW in Public Institution Wage Arrears Over Last 5 Years... 1.2 Billion KRW Unresolved
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] It has been revealed that approximately 7 billion KRW in unpaid wages occurred at 374 public institutions over the past five years.
According to the "Status of Wage Arrears in Public Institutions" submitted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor to Lee Su-jin, a member of the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, as of July this year, a total of 3995 people at 374 public institutions have experienced wage arrears amounting to 7.01 billion KRW from 2016 to the present.
Of the total wage arrears amounting to 5.83 billion KRW, the Ministry of Employment and Labor has resolved these through guidance and settlement, but 1.18 billion KRW remains either under litigation or unresolved.
Assembly member Lee Su-jin criticized, "It is unacceptable that public institutions, which should set an example for private companies, have large amounts of unpaid wages every year."

She added, "The government must prevent wage arrears in public institutions through continuous supervision, and especially strictly punish public institutions that repeatedly have wage arrears annually."
