Good News for Kimjang Season!… Mapo-gu Operates 'Online Mapo Naru Saeujeot Market'
In place of the Mapo-gu flagship festival 'Maponaru Saeujeot Festival' canceled due to COVID-19... Residents' requests for Saeujeot sales flood in, online market open from October 19 to November 13... About 15% cheaper than market prices with high-quality products... Promoting urban-rural regional cooperation effects
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) decided to operate the ‘Online Mapo-naru Salted Shrimp Market’ after receiving an overwhelming number of requests from citizens wishing to purchase salted shrimp ahead of the kimchi-making season, despite canceling the ‘2020 Mapo-naru Salted Shrimp Festival,’ the district’s representative festival and a traditional port culture reenactment festival, to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
The newly launched online Mapo-naru salted shrimp market will be available on the Mapo-gu Office website from October 19 to November 13, for about a month.
To offer citizens a variety of salted shrimp, the district received recommendations for 37 salted shrimp businesses with good quality and independently operated websites from local governments in famous salted shrimp production areas such as Gang-gyeong, Gwangcheon, Boryeong, Buan, and Sinan in early October.
During the sales period, the 37 businesses will sell high-quality salted shrimp at prices about 15% lower than market prices and will provide free delivery for purchases over a certain amount.
Citizens wishing to purchase can buy salted shrimp by ▲clicking the main banner on the Mapo-gu Office website ▲clicking the banner of the respective business by region ▲checking products on the business website ▲placing an online order on the website or ordering by phone.
Additionally, to assist elderly citizens who may find it difficult to check products and prices and make purchases online, the district plans to distribute leaflets containing types of salted shrimp, prices, and business contact information at 16 community service centers within the district.
Meanwhile, since this salted shrimp market will be operated in a new non-face-to-face online format, a surprise guerrilla salted shrimp auction event will be held in front of the Mapo-gu Office plaza during the online sales period to attract residents’ interest and participation.

Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun of Mapo-gu said, “Although the Mapo-naru Salted Shrimp Festival, which is usually held around this time every year, was canceled to prioritize the safety of residents and visitors amid the COVID-19 situation, consumers can conveniently purchase high-quality salted shrimp through this ‘Online Mapo-naru Salted Shrimp Market.’ Furthermore, I hope this will lead to regional win-win effects between urban and rural areas and revitalize various regions.”
