Expecting Win-Win with Farmers through Local Specialty Characters of Green Tea, Cockles, and Kiwi
[Boseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Jeollanam-do Boseong-gun announced on the 16th that the specialty product character created by the county, ‘BS Samchongsa,’ won the prestigious grand prize at the ‘3rd Our Neighborhood Character’ awards.
The ‘3rd Our Neighborhood Character’ event is hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the Korea Creative Content Agency.
Boseong-gun, with a population of about 40,000, won first place by recording the highest number of votes through active promotional activities in competition with local governments with populations exceeding one million, such as Daegu Metropolitan City, Gwangju Metropolitan City, Gangwon Province, and Goyang City.
‘BS Samchongsa’ is a character shaped after Boseong-gun’s representative specialty products: green tea, cockles, and kiwi. Created by public officials themselves to help local farms during the COVID-19 situation, this ‘kind character’ is actively promoted on Boseong-gun’s YouTube channel and other social media platforms.
In particular, it became an issue that the character was created without going through professional agency character development services, which usually cost tens of millions to hundreds of millions of won, but was planned and designed directly by the Boseong-gun public relations team officials with a design cost of only 3 million won.
In this ‘Our Neighborhood Character Olympics,’ which saw a record participation of 63 local governments, Boseong-gun was the only county-level government to advance to the finals, emerging as a super rookie. In the finals, it surprised everyone by winning against metropolitan and capital area local governments, demonstrating the strength of small and medium-sized local governments.
County Governor Kim Cheol-woo said, “It is meaningful as it seems to have become an opportunity for residents and expatriates to unite as one in the stagnant situation caused by COVID-19. The know-how of Boseong-gun, which has actively engaged in SNS-based activities, and the aspirations of the residents have collectively motivated us to achieve this good result.” He added, “Thanks to the active participation of many people including Boseong residents, public officials, expatriates, tourists, and nearby government offices in voting, we were able to win first place. We will grow this character into a kind and practical one that promotes the region in harmony with local residents and supports local farms, living up to the interest and love we have received.”
