[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Kim Jongcheol, the newly appointed leader of the Justice Party, called on Lee Nakyeon, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, to “start a competition in good faith” in his inaugural speech on the 11th and urged him to join in enacting the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
In his inaugural speech as the new leader and the 6th leadership team, Kim said, “When the Democratic Party and the Justice Party engage in a competition in good faith for the people, the people can be happier.” Lee, congratulating Kim on his election the day before, stated, “I look forward to raising progressive agendas that will keep the Democratic Party alert, and I will share them with an open mind.”
Kim said, “I have one request for Leader Lee. I hope you will join us in enacting the Serious Accidents Punishment Act submitted by the Justice Party,” adding, “Two days ago, a worker at CJ Logistics died due to overwork. I understand that the Democratic Party is also preparing a similar bill.” He further added, “I hope that a law to save workers dying from overwork and industrial accidents will be established as soon as possible so that we can take a step closer to protecting the lives of the people.” Lee had expressed support for the bill during a visit to former Justice Party leader Sim Sangjeong on the 1st of last month and also urged efforts in the relevant standing committee during a negotiation group speech on the 7th of the same month.
Regarding North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jongun’s remarks at the military parade the day before, saying “I look forward to overcoming the health crisis together with our beloved southern compatriots and meeting them,” Kim Jongcheol welcomed the expression of will and called for efforts toward peace and disarmament. He said, “The South and North have the largest military forces in the world. This standoff is painful for young people in both the South and North,” adding, “I hope the Moon Jaein administration will also actively pursue peace and disarmament efforts.”
Finally, Kim said, “The common point of all welfare states around the world that we envy is that progressive parties are in power or at least the main opposition party,” and urged support by saying, “We need to grow the Justice Party so that the people can be happy. Please do not be afraid of becoming happy.”
