Samsung Electronics to Host 'Samsung AI Forum 2020' Online Next Month
Live Broadcast Worldwide via YouTube Channel
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Samsung Electronics announced on the 6th that it will hold the 'Samsung AI Forum 2020' from the 2nd to the 3rd of next month. Now in its fourth year, the 'Samsung AI Forum' invites world-renowned artificial intelligence (AI) scholars and experts to share the rapidly advancing latest AI research achievements and to explore future research directions and strategies.
Considering the COVID-19 situation this year, Samsung Electronics will hold the forum online. The event will be broadcast live worldwide through Samsung Electronics' YouTube channel, with plans to expand this forum into a 'Global AI Forum.'
On the first day, organized by the Advanced Institute of Technology, the theme will be 'AI Technology for Changes in the Real World,' discussing AI technology fields and research directions that can contribute to solving global issues such as climate change and pandemics.
This year, the forum will begin with an opening address by CEO (Vice Chairman) Kim Ki-nam, followed by presentations from distinguished speakers from academia and industry, including Professor Yoshua Bengio from the University of Montreal, Canada; Professor Yann LeCun from New York University, USA; Professor Chelsea Finn from Stanford University, USA; Fellow Ham Don-hee from Samsung Electronics Advanced Institute of Technology; Dr. Jennifer Wortman Vaughan from Microsoft Research; and Dr. Tara Sainath from Google Research.
Subsequently, President Kang In-yeop of the System LSI Business Division and the speakers will participate as panelists to discuss the direction and applicability of AI. Notably, this year, the 'Samsung AI Researcher Award' has been newly established to discover outstanding young researchers in the AI field.
The 'AI Researcher Award' is open to AI-related domestic and international researchers aged 35 or younger. Samsung Electronics plans to announce the winners in October after a fair review by internal experts and an external advisory panel of professors. Winners will receive a prize of $30,000 and an opportunity to present on the 'first day of the AI Forum.'
Meanwhile, to strengthen research collaboration and networking in the AI field, Samsung Electronics appointed Professor Yoshua Bengio, a world-renowned scholar who won the 'Turing Award,' known as the Nobel Prize of AI, in 2018, as a 'Samsung AI Professor.' Through this appointment, Professor Bengio will co-chair the 'Samsung AI Forum' alongside Hwang Sung-woo, President of the Advanced Institute of Technology, and plans to collaborate to discover outstanding young researchers, invite scholars to the AI Forum, and expand the foundation of Samsung Electronics' AI research and development based on his extensive network in the deep learning field.
The second day, hosted by Samsung Research, will be held under the theme 'Human-Centered AI,' sharing the role of AI in creating a better world based on understanding and communication with humans, as well as future development directions. Starting with a keynote speech by Seung Hyun-joon, President of Samsung Research, attendees can experience various lectures by AI experts actively conducting research worldwide.
The event will proceed with four technical sessions: the natural language processing session will be presented by Professor Christopher Manning from Stanford University, USA; the vision session by Professor Devi Parikh from Georgia Institute of Technology, USA; and the robotics session will be presented by Daniel Lee, Vice President and Head of Samsung Research New York AI Center.
Professor Christopher Manning, a world-renowned scholar in natural language processing, is currently collaborating on technology research with Samsung Electronics. Following his keynote speech at the '1st AI Forum,' he will present on 'The Development Direction of Natural Language Processing Technology Needed for Human-Centered AI' at this forum. Then, AI expert Seung Hyun-joon, specializing in brain neuroengineering, will lead a panel discussion with four session presenters to discuss 'Future Prospects and Considerations in the Field of Human-Centered AI.'
