Gangnam-gu Promotes Online Campaign to Increase Mandatory Car Insurance Enrollment Rate
"‘Road Outlaws’ Financial Supervisory Service Officials' Lecture and YouTube Animation to Eradicate Uninsured Vehicles"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jeong Soon-gyun) is conducting online promotions starting this month to curb uninsured vehicles, known as "lawless drivers on the road," and to increase the mandatory automobile insurance subscription rate in line with the "ontact" trend.
This measure aims to eradicate uninsured vehicles that threaten the lives and safety of residents and to minimize fines imposed for non-subscription to mandatory insurance. Promotional videos related to automobile insurance are provided through the Gangnam-gu Office YouTube channel.
In particular, a representative from the Financial Supervisory Service gives a lecture explaining essential information and precautions to know when subscribing to insurance. Additionally, a 20-second animation video to assist with mandatory automobile insurance subscription is made available for anyone to watch via the electronic display boards at the Seoul Gangnam Driver’s License Examination Office of the Road Traffic Authority and the Gangnam-gu Office.
Meanwhile, under the Automobile Damage Compensation Guarantee Act, those who do not subscribe to mandatory insurance are subject to fines up to 3 million KRW, and operating a vehicle without mandatory insurance can lead to prosecution, resulting in imprisonment of up to one year or fines up to 10 million KRW.

A district official stated, "Uninsured vehicles, called 'lawless drivers on the road,' mostly make it difficult to receive compensation in case of traffic accidents and can lead to secondary damages such as hit-and-run accidents," adding, "Automobile insurance is essential for you and your family, and we hope you will participate in creating a 'safe city Gangnam.'"
