Gwanak Youth Volunteer to Share Songpyeon with 40 Elderly Living Alone Households
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] In Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee), young people participating in the 'Youth Social Dining' program, which targets single-person households who eat alone, gathered together to make songpyeon by hand for the Chuseok holiday and delivered them to 40 elderly single-person households in the area, practicing warm neighborly love.
Social Dining is an online non-face-to-face program where young people who eat alone gather online and, under the guidance of a cooking instructor via a virtual connection, practice everyday cooking, share cooking know-how, and receive health education. It also contributes to preventing social isolation among single-person youth households through communication among participating youth.
An official from the district said, “Due to the recent spread of COVID-19, we planned the Chuseok songpyeon sharing volunteer activity with young people because we wanted to share warm affection with neighbors in need who feel relatively more isolated than ever.”
In early August, the youth made steamed chicken dishes and, in cooperation with the local welfare center, conducted sharing volunteer activities for 40 vulnerable households.
Park Yoo-jin (29), who participated as a volunteer that day, said, “Participating in the songpyeon sharing volunteer activity gave me hope that it would be a great comfort to neighbors exhausted physically and mentally by COVID-19, and it also became an opportunity to increase my interest and affection for the local community.”

Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “Although these are difficult times due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, I thank the young people who took precious time before the Chuseok holiday to participate in the songpyeon sharing volunteer activity. We will actively support the spread of a culture of practicing love through sharing with marginalized neighbors in our community.”
