Gwangju City to Begin Construction of Public Wastewater Treatment Facility at Urban High-Tech Industrial Complex in October
Daily Treatment of 1,000 Tons of Wastewater... Scheduled for Completion in the First Half of 2022
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 24th that it will begin construction next month of a public wastewater treatment facility to process wastewater discharged from business sites located in Nam-gu Urban Hi-tech Industrial Complex and Energy Valley.
The Urban Hi-tech and Energy Valley Public Wastewater Treatment Facility Construction Project (Phase 1) is a project with a total budget of 14.4 billion KRW to cleanly treat 1,000 tons of wastewater per day.
Following the designation of the Urban Hi-tech Industrial Complex and Energy Valley as economic free zones in June, the construction will be urgently ordered to ensure no disruption in attracting investment and related companies such as artificial intelligence, with completion scheduled for the first half of 2022.
The facility building of the public wastewater treatment plant will have a total floor area of 1,181 ㎥, with one above-ground floor and two basement levels. The above-ground floor will house the machine room and electrical room, while the first basement floor will contain all facilities related to the wastewater treatment process where odor generation is a concern, thereby preventing odor emissions in advance.
Various trees will be planted on the ground level, and sports facilities will be installed to provide citizens with spaces for rest and leisure activities.

Lee Hanguk, Director of the Sewage Management Division, said, “Once the public wastewater treatment facility construction project is completed, it will be possible to stably treat high-concentration wastewater, thereby increasing the productivity of the industrial complex and transforming the sewage treatment plant, which was previously perceived as a nuisance facility, into a resting space within the city.”
