[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Hamyang-gun, Gyeongnam announced on the 22nd that the 'Crop Disaster Insurance' for garlic and onions will be available for enrollment starting in October.
The 'Crop Disaster Insurance' is known as a key local government subsidy project that not only guarantees safe farming activities and alleviates farm management instability but also stabilizes farm income, as unpredictable weather conditions due to recent climate anomalies are increasing day by day.
The county cultivated approximately 723 hectares of onions in 2020, generating an income of 30 billion KRW. The garlic cultivation area is about 14 hectares.
The crop disaster insurance enrollment rate in the county has been increasing annually, with 23% in 2017, 25.3% in 2018, and 34.6% in 2019. Farmers wishing to enroll in crop disaster insurance can visit local agricultural and livestock cooperatives or product-specific cooperatives for consultation and enrollment.

A county official stated, "The importance of crop disaster insurance is gradually increasing due to the diversification of disaster types such as abnormal low temperatures and frost in early spring, and the increased frequency of medium to large typhoons," adding, "We ask farmers to take an active interest in and enroll in crop disaster insurance to prepare for unexpected natural disasters that may occur at any time next year."
