Learn the Proper Way to Walk Your Dog Together
Seongdong-gu Operates 'Pet Dog Walking Manners Education' for Pet Owners and Dogs...Combining Video Theory and On-site Practice to Reduce Conflicts Between Pet Owners and Non-Pet Owners
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) will operate the "Pet Dog Walking Manners Education" program in October, aimed at pet owners and their dogs to teach proper walking manners.
Walking a pet dog is essential for the dog's health and is the happiest time for owners with their pets. However, many owners are concerned about problematic behaviors such as barking or attacking others or other dogs during walks.
Additionally, issues frequently arise when basic manners are not observed, such as not using a leash or failing to clean up pet waste, causing discomfort to non-pet owners.
In response, the district has launched a pet dog walking education program combining theory and practice to help pet owners feel more comfortable during walks, reduce problematic behaviors in dogs, and foster a culture where pet owners, non-pet owners, and animals coexist harmoniously.
Applications for the education program will be accepted online through the Seongdong-gu website until October 6, divided into three sessions with a total of 36 teams. Any Seongdong-gu resident with a registered pet can apply.
Participants will be selected by prioritizing households that have adopted abandoned dogs, with the remaining spots filled by random computer drawing. The results will be announced on October 8. Detailed schedules and eligibility can be found on the Seongdong-gu Office website.
Theoretical education will be conducted from October 9 to 16, with pet etiquette and basic information provided through videos for owners to study in advance.
Practical training will take place from October 17 to 24, where owners who have learned the basics will receive individual coaching on proper leash use, waste disposal, and other walking manners while walking their dogs on-site, including face-to-face training with other dogs.
Since establishing a dedicated pet team in January this year, the district has been implementing various animal welfare policies and projects, including the nation's first free pet consultation center, one-on-one dog behavior correction programs, and pet etiquette campaigns with honorary animal protection monitors. In the second half of the year, efforts will be intensified to create a proper pet culture through the enactment of animal protection ordinances and operation of pet behavior correction education.
