Jeju, Making Every Effort to Get Fair Price for Jeju Gamgyul Ahead of Chuseok
Vice Governor Go Young-kwon Orders "Additional Drone Equipment Deployment Needed" in Emergency Meeting on 17th
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Chang-won] Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 21st that it will implement special measures to realize fair pricing for Jeju citrus and enhance product quality ahead of the Chuseok holiday.
On the 17th, Deputy Governor for Political Affairs Ko Young-kwon held an emergency meeting and stated, “There have been cases recently where under-ripe citrus fruits are being put on the market, raising concerns that most farmers who have worked hard to produce high-quality citrus may suffer damage.” He ordered strong enforcement measures, including the additional deployment of drones to inspect immature fruit harvesting.
Earlier, on the 15th, Deputy Governor Ko visited the Jeju Citrus Cooperative Distribution Center located in Jocheon-eup, Jeju City, and declared, “We will strictly crack down to prevent the shipment of non-commercial products by distributors.”
Accordingly, Jeju Province will expand the number of drones used for inspecting extremely early immature fruit harvesting from one to four and operate them continuously from the 21st until the day before Chuseok, the 30th.
The enforcement targets are farms producing extremely early citrus, and unannounced surprise drone inspections will be conducted to maintain a thorough monitoring system.
Additionally, Jeju Province plans to respond strongly and decisively by increasing fines up to 10 million KRW for packing houses caught distributing non-commercial citrus and suspending administrative and financial support related to citrus. This is to establish order in citrus distribution and manage quality.
Currently, the fine is 5 million KRW, but once the ordinance concerning citrus production and distribution is amended at the Jeju Provincial Council’s extraordinary session, it will be immediately announced and applied.
In particular, Jeju Province plans to build a stable distribution system by expanding direct consumer channels such as mountain electronic auctions, cyber transactions, and online shopping malls in response to changes in non-face-to-face purchasing patterns due to COVID-19.
The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Citrus Shipping Cooperative Association (Chairman Deputy Governor Ko Young-kwon) will also attach an appeal titled “Thank you for cooperating to achieve fair pricing for citrus” to 410 packing houses in the province starting from the 21st, urging active cooperation from citrus farmers and distributors.
