Announcement of New Judge Appointees: 155 Candidates Including 15 Current Prosecutors
[Asia Economy Reporter Bae Kyunghwan] The list of candidates who are in the final screening stage to be appointed as judges among those with legal careers has been disclosed. Fifteen current prosecutors are included.
On the 18th, the Supreme Court announced the list of 155 candidates who passed the final screening of the 2020 General Legal Career Judge Appointment Committee.
The appointees include 15 former prosecutors, 80 lawyers from law firms, 18 public defenders, 14 from national and public institutions, and 28 current judicial researchers. Ninety-eight have completed the Judicial Research and Training Institute, and 57 are graduates of law schools. There are 100 males and 55 females.
The appointment of judges from general legal careers targets those with more than five years of experience as legal professionals. Since the announcement in March, the Supreme Court has conducted evaluations including document screening and interviews before deliberation.
The Supreme Court will disclose the list of 155 candidates until the 4th of next month and collect opinions on whether they are qualified as judges. The list can be viewed on the Supreme Court website and the Judge Appointment website.
After collecting opinions, a meeting of the Supreme Court Justices will be held around mid-next month to review the qualifications of the candidates and make the final decision on whether to approve their appointments.

Meanwhile, to enhance transparency in the judge appointment process, the Supreme Court is disclosing the list of appointees. The 2020 judge appointment process is divided into two types based on legal career: general legal career candidates with more than five years of experience, and dedicated judges with more than 20 years of legal experience.
