[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongwook Park] The first death among confirmed COVID-19 cases has occurred in Pohang City, Gyeongbuk Province. This is the 59th death in the entire Gyeongbuk region, occurring 129 days after the last death on May 10.
According to health authorities on the 17th, Mr. A (93), residing in Ocheon-eup, Nam-gu, passed away at 6:27 PM the previous day (16th), shortly after being admitted to Dongguk University Gyeongju Hospital, which has national quarantine beds, following confirmation of infection.
This grandfather, who was a recipient of the single-person care service, had been hospitalized for about a week at the end of last month due to general weakness but was discharged. However, on the morning of the 15th, he was found by a visiting welfare worker in a state of respiratory distress.
Mr. A was transported to the hospital, tested positive for COVID-19, and was admitted, but ultimately did not regain consciousness. The quarantine authorities are conducting an epidemiological investigation into the route of infection for this grandfather.

On the same day, a female welfare worker in her 60s, who had been diligently caring for the exhausted grandfather at his residence and reported the case to 119, also tested positive after being examined at the Nam-gu Public Health Center screening clinic. As a result, the cumulative number of confirmed cases residing in the Pohang area as of midnight on the 17th was counted at 67. The total for Gyeongbuk stands at 1,455.
