[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] Israel signed a normalization agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain on the 15th (local time) at the White House.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Bahrain Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani held a signing ceremony in the White House garden for the 'Abraham Accords,' an agreement to normalize diplomatic relations between Israel, the UAE, and Bahrain. On his own Twitter, President Trump wrote, "A historic day for Middle East peace. I welcome the leaders from Israel, the UAE, and Bahrain who have come to the White House to sign a historic deal that no one thought possible. More countries will follow!"
Prime Minister Netanyahu also said, "Today is the pivot of history and heralds a new dawn of peace," adding, "This new momentum for peace can completely end the conflict between the Arabs and Israel."
The signing of this agreement came just over a month after President Trump announced on the 13th of last month that Israel and the UAE had agreed to normalize diplomatic relations. The normalization agreement between Israel and Bahrain was swiftly finalized within two days after the announcement on the 11th.
This is the first time in 72 years since Israel's establishment in 1948 that it has agreed to establish diplomatic relations with Arab countries in the Gulf region. Israel had previously established diplomatic relations with Middle Eastern countries Egypt and Jordan.
