[Exclusive] LG Display Officially Requests Special Export License for Huawei from US Department of Commerce
Items such as OLED Panels and Drive IC Driver Chips
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] LG Display has officially requested a special export license from the U.S. government for display components to China’s Huawei.
According to industry sources on the 15th, LG Display applied for a special export license related to Huawei to the U.S. Department of Commerce in the afternoon.
LG Display supplies OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panels for smartphones to Huawei. The company is known to have officially requested export permission for display panels and drive ICs, which are the driving chips.
The core technology of the drive IC, the chip that drives the display panel, is owned by the U.S. semiconductor design company ARM, which is why it is included in the restricted export items to Huawei.
If the U.S. government grants export approval following LG Display’s request, the company will be able to supply products to Huawei exceptionally. However, considering the U.S. government’s pressure on Huawei, the industry expects the possibility of approval to be low.
