'Untact Era, To the Mountains'... Daegu Biseulsan Visitors Increase 45% Compared to Last Year
"More People Likely Hiking Local Hills" ... Daegu City Conducts Comprehensive Inspection of Hiking Trails
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongwook Park] Due to restrictions on indoor exercise such as health clubs caused by the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the number of hikers nationwide has significantly increased, and in the case of Daegu Biseulsan Natural Recreation Forest, it has been identified that the number of visitors increased by more than 40% compared to last year.
According to data from the Tourism Knowledge Information System operated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the number of visitors to Biseulsan Natural Recreation Forest from January to March this year was about 159,000, a 44% increase compared to 110,000 during the same period last year.
Considering that Biseulsan, along with Palgongsan, is a representative mountain in the Daegu area, the Daegu city government expects the hiking increase rate to be even higher for those seeking non-face-to-face activities by visiting local neighborhood mountains.
In particular, as social distancing level 2 was implemented nationwide, not only the 50s and 60s age group but also younger people who used to enjoy indoor exercise and sports such as health clubs have joined hiking. Although group expedition hikes by tourist buses have decreased, the trend of solo hikers or family unit hikers has greatly increased.
Accordingly, Daegu city plans to conduct a comprehensive inspection and repair by the 21st of this month on 160 trails totaling 517 km, including Palgongsan and Biseulsan, which have been damaged by road surface erosion due to recent heavy rains and consecutive typhoons.
